Pits of Seth (1 & 2)

POS

Pits of Seth was a fun little Dungeon Crawl, the first game I even attempted in Excel. While it’s certainly not polished, it was a lot of fun to play and I spent many hours going deeper and deeper into its random dungeons (and often never returning).

Someday I’m going to make a bigger, better version of this. Someday. But for now, enjoy.

Pits of Seth 2 is the above game souped up to reflect more Excel tricks. Now you have sounds, better graphics and much better game play.

To install, do the following:

  1. Make a folder and unzip all the files into it.
  2. In the folder, click on pitsofseth.ttf and install this font in your computer.
  3. Read the instructions in the “Readme” word doc. If you’ve played POS before, you’ll have a pretty good understanding of what you are up against.
  4. Play (execute the PitsOfSeth excel folder.
  5. When you are done playing, close the window using the “X” in the upper-right. Save so you keep your last position.

  1. I’m not going to install it on my computer, but would love to see you play it.
Is this the game you were working on at Beech?

    1. No, this is one I did a long time ago. The one at Beech Mt is nearly done – waiting on… some other guy to finish it.

I’ll bring it out with me next time we come to the beach. You’ll like to see it.

      1. This one was done a long time ago, but improved significantly while Robert waits on the other guy to work on the Beech Mt game. If that guy would stop playing excel games, he might have time to finish his work.

Back to playing excel games (Pits of Seth 2) now. Later I’ll work on Solar Trader.

  2. Funny. I talk about this game all the time. I tell friends about how this was my first computer game. My mom wouldn’t let us have a floppy drive so we had it on a tape drive. 45 minutes to load. Sometimes we would play for hours, other times 3 minutes, teleported into a rock, then start again. 🙂

    1. What a nice thing to say – I didn’t know it was your first. Still, yes, I remember writing this originally on the old Atari. Like you said, 45 minutes to load.

When I went to VPI, we’d play this game late into the night. I think six could play, so we’d pile everyone in and play a big multiplayer adventure. I remember the times (since there was no automap) where the guy with the graph paper would look up while we were backtracking and say, “Wait, this isn’t right.” And everyone would turn and flip out – “You gotta be kidding! We’re lost???”

Someday I really want to boost this game up, with intelligent dungeons and interesting combat and stuff. But yes, it’s a lot of fun, the old POS feeling where you stay inside a little too long, a little too deep, and everything goes to pieces!

Caryn, thanks so much for your kind words. You cheered me right up!
